I’m going to let you all in on a little-known secret about this suburban housewife. There is something I’ve always wanted to be able to do and be really, really good at. Something I currentlyattempt todo in the car, in the shower, while watching YouTube videos…
I wish I could sing. Like really sing. As in “And you, and you, and you, you’re gonna love me…..” Serious talent. I channel Effie from “Dreamgirls” every night before bed, hoping that I might wake up with an amazingly gifted voice. And, every morning, I’m disappointed.
I got to thinking about this tonight on the treadmill. I was watching, of course, “Dreamgirls” while running my 6 miles. Okay, it was more like 3 miles. Fine. I was walking. God, if you’re gonna push…it was only 2 1/2 miles. But that’s hardly the point.
Anyway, I was listening to these women with incredible voices and wondering why God blessed them with this specific gift. Can you imagine, and maybe some of you can, what it must feel like to just belt out a song and know that you’re not humiliating yourself? That people would want to sit and listen to you? You know, the opposite of sit and ridicule you? Seriously, if I had this gift I would be singing everywhere, all the time.
“He-ah-ey-ah-ey-ah ba-a-a-a-bay….can you haaaaaaaaand me the reeeeeeeem-o-ah-o-ah-o-ah-ote???????”
God, that would be sofreakin’ cool. It’d be like High School Musical in this place. I’d be a cute little young thing and Jer would be likeZac Efron. And we’d sing…and dance…and…hmm. Sorry, I got distracted.
The point is, I would love to be able to sing. When Avery was about4she woke up one morning just beaming. I asked her what she was smiling about. She told me shedreamed that she was riding around on a unicorn and that she had always wanted to ride a unicorn. It was her “Dream Come True.”Being able to sing would be my own Dream Come True.
Do you have one? Is there something that you have always wanted to be able to do and just don’t quite have the skill? I think it’s healthy to wish and hope. I’ll never be a Jennifer Hudson, Celine Dion or even a Whitney Houston. But I candream and it’s incredibly good for the soul to dream.Okay, maybe not about Zac Efron…
Love to all and Happy Friday!!!

Yes, yes, yes. I totally wish I could sing. I’d settle for soloist at church. Instead I’m more of a mouth-the-words-from-the-pew gal.
I also wish I was an artist. How cool would it be if you could make the pictures on the paper look like the ones in your head?
Mindy says
I think having the ability to paint or draw, anything beyond coloring inside the lines, would be awesome. My husband can draw and it secretly ticks me off everytime the kids ask him to help them draw some random animal. And it actually LOOKS like that random animal. I definitely DO NOT have that gift. =)

This is my dream, too! I whispered it to Matt one time in church and he told me to instead be thankful that I can’t sing, as everyone would be hounding me all the time to sing at their birthday, wedding . . . I guess that’s a positive spin on tone-deafness!
Mindy says
That is definitely another way to look at it..leave it to Matt to come up with a positive for “not” being able to do something. =)

Take voice lessons!! Seriously, when she was little my daughter did alot of community theatre and she hated singing in front of people so we got her voice lessons for a year. I went with her to everyone (since she was 8) and I learned alot too! I now am not ashamed to sing in public (although no one is probably ever going to pay me too. lol.) and she went on to have a large part in a musical. She’s got a nice voice (again not an amazing voice) and the boost in her self confidence was tremendous. We sing all the time at our house.
My dream would be to be able to paint in oils. I always see things and think “I want to paint that!” I need to take lessons!

I’ve often wondered if those “voice lessons in a box” you can pick up off the Internet would work. I’d love to do it secretly and get all good and then bust out with a rousing version of “America the Beautiful” and shock the heck out of everyone. =)
Take up oil painting! I think that half the battle is having the desire to do it. =)

Okay…I don’t know where the smiley face came from…it was supposed to say that she was only eight.

Mindy, I agree about the voice lessons. If I have learned anything from the blogs I read and the process I’ve been going through, it’s that you have that dream for a reason. Get off your “but” and find a way to make it happen. No buts! I believe in you!
Mindy says
Daphne-
I love that, ‘get off your “but” and find a way to make it.’ Thanks for the encouragement!

If you get voice lesson in a box, do a review on it, I might try it. I can not carry a tune in a bucket. Maybe one day I can “dream the impossible dream”.
But, until then I should take up knitting or something that does not require me to even hum.

Mindy says
If I actually do the voice lesson thing I will DEFINITELY review it! And as far as knitting goes…I’m even worse at knitting than singing. =) Maybe I’ll pick up a “Knitting for Dummies” book while I’m at it. =)

Ahhhh, my dream come true would be to fly. Like, myself…like a bird. Or a bubble, I guess.
But that ain’t never gonna happen and I’m deathly afraid of flying.
I wonder if there’s a way to reconcile my dream with reality? Woah, I just got way too deep there…
Mindy says
Wow, Christina…I’m trying to process all of your wisdom. =) Xanax helped reconcile my reality with flying… =)

Write a book that changed the world. Solve a conspiracy theory. Own a big Santa Fe style home on 20 acres and be surrounded by animals. A one night stand with Robert Downey JR. Spot bigfoot. Fly around with Santa Claus while he delivers presents. Play in a rock band. Okay, I’ll stop now.
Mindy says
Holy cow Christina…dream much? Love that! I kind of harbor a little crush on Robert Downey Jr. too. And, hey…I’ll sing in the band and you can play the tambourine! It’s perfect!

I agree with the comments above – just sing! I had a vocal scholarship in college so I guess that means I can sing, but there’s always levels of degrees. Someone is always “better” and so you hold back. So I can sing, but I don’t because I’m intimidated by the SO many people who are more talented than I am. So I say, don’t let that hold you back. Look at little kids – they sing and they don’t care if someone else sings better or not. I have this dream of wanting to sing at a local coffee shop. I even started taking guitar lessons to learn how to play for myself. So, why don’t I do it?????
Mindy says
Oh, you should! Do it! Even if the first time you had to sing kraoke-style I think it would be awesome to hold a little concert in a coffee shop. And I love listening to kids sing…Avery does it all the time and that kid has NO reservations. I should take a lesson from her!
